David's Book on Employment Discrimination Law

Prevent Discrimination in the WorkplaceA law book for managers — with a sprinkling of religion (Judeo-Christianity) in it

The book shown here, A Legal and Practical Handbook for Ending Discrimination in the Workplace, was written by Attorney David A. Robinson and published by Paulist Press in 2003. That book is now (in 2009) out of print. Sometime in 2009 David will show a new book here. The new book, like the 2003 book, is a practical, inspirational guide for managers. The book explains the employment discrimination laws and provides excellent practical tips on how to comply with those laws. And, like the 2003 book, it has an added feature: a discussion of the Judeo-Christian bases of the employment discrimination laws. The book is more a law book than a religion book (the book is approximately 95% about law and practical tips, and only 5% about religion), but the 5% that is about religion does give the book a religious flavor that many managers enjoy. The manager who tries to be morally and ethically correct in the workplace, not just legally safe, will enjoy this book and learn a great deal from it. The book helps managers manage effectively, efficiently, successfully, and with a clear conscience.

The book provides tips to managers on how to run a “tight ship” (a hard-working, disciplined workforce and a successful business) without violating the discrimination laws. The law and the Bible allow employers to run a “tight ship.” To maintain a “tight ship,” it is sometimes necessary to fire, layoff, discipline, warn, or counsel an employee. The employee who “sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and he who sows bountifully will also reap bountifully.” 2 Corinthians 9:6. That means that employees should be hired, compensated, promoted, disciplined, and terminated based on what their productivity and services are worth, not on their race, color, national origin, gender, age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation. It means employers need not put up with slothfulness, disobedience, or inability on the part of an employee just because the employee needs money to live on. An employer is not an employee’s “keeper.” Employees who think they are victims of discrimination but who in fact are victims of their own slothfulness, disobedience, or inability will find little solace in the Bible or in court. The Bible urges employees to work hard and not blame their problems on their race, color, national origin, gender, age, religion, disability, or sexual orientation unless their problems really are the result of race discrimination, color discrimination, gender discrimination, age dicrimination, religion discrimination, disability discrimination, or sexual oritentation discrimination.

Of course, the Bible is not “the law” in this country. This country separates “church” and “state” to a large extent. But many of our laws are derived from the Bible. David’s book is primarily about law, not the Bible, but he does use some biblical passages to help employers understand and comply with the law.
